Birthdays are one of those things that I kinda hate getting ready for yet at the end of the day I look back and I’m so happy that we made the effort. I said “we” because It was most definitely a family affair.
Yesterday (Saturday), the entire day was spent in the garden or watching all the kids while JB & Doug worked in the garden. They collected trees to make the fence for the garden and brought in compost for my beds. So there wasn’t much bday prep going on yesterday, except Ava did make the mini cupcakes and brownies last night before bed while I started to clean up from the day.
Summer ended up staying up late (later than everyone else) and eating SEVERAL cupcakes while the rest of the house was dead asleep. I woke up at 2 am to her asleep on the floor next to my bed with a cupcake in hand in fact. This morning while walking around I discovered that there were crumbs (evidence) in several places where she had sat down and ate a mini cupcake or two. Who knows how many she ate we just know 7 were missing this morning from the cupcake pans.
My day started immediately in panic mode because yes, my alarm in fact had gone off when I had set it to at 7:00 am. The problem was, the ringer was on silent. I sent Doug off to the store first thing to get bacon that Violet had requested as part of her bday bfast and I had forgotten to buy yesterday when I went to the store (typical Mama move). Ava jumped right in to help decorating the table tops with vintage doilies and Miles started making the turkey and cheese sandwiches & PB&Js’. All that left for me was to make the buttercream icing. We were cleaning and arranging it all until the second our first guest walked in of course and then it was all fun from there.
Luna, Gilly, Autumn & Noah were our first guests to arrive. They brought Violet the sweetest homemade cards and a bowl full of Violet’s freshly picked to add as edible decoration to the cupcakes. Also a really nice set of kids pots & gardening tools for Violet to plant her own flowers in. Our other new to us friends & neighbors Anna & Andrew came shortly after with their crew: Lily, Forest & Rosie bearing more sweet homemade cards and new books for Violet.
Violet was so happy to have her friends there especially the ones she doesn’t get to play with all the time. Wyatt & Morgan of course were there and Cora came later with her Mom & siblings who ended up staying all day and just hanging out. We had such a nice day catching up with old & new friends. Any time that I get to spend with the Coleman family always feels special because well they are just special. Oh I forgot to mention also that Carly made the most delicious hot tea (2 different kinds) for Violet’s tea party.
It was windy, but sunny and a fairly warm 55 degrees. Not as warm as yesterday (low 70’s) but still nice and I was thankful for no rain. After a while of tea partying it up and eating lots of cupcakes & brownies, we all headed outside to try and have some adult conversation while the kids ran around, jumping on the trampoline, playing in the many dirt piles and even taking a little hike down to the creek to see a dead raccoon.
I’m so happy to start hosting for the first time in a long time. It’s something that I think that I want to do yet I don’t feel very good at it. I love having people hanging out in the space that we created. I love seeing people feel comfortable and happy in the same way that we do. Getting the chance to deepen my relationships with these people in our circle of friends is what it’s all about and there is no other way to do that except by hanging out with those people. Eating, drinking and watching kids together in nice weather, with good music in the background. That’s about all it takes for a good party in my book. I think we did that today. All in celebration of our big girl flower Violet Marie Reid who turned 5 today!
